Sega to Acquire Angry Birds Creator Rovio Entertainment, Expands into Mobile Gaming Market

On Monday morning, Sega announced its plan to acquire Rovio entertainment, the Finnish company that developed the popular Angry Birds games, for $750 million.

 

Sega, a well-known video game company, has made a significant move in the mobile gaming industry with its acquisition of Rovio Entertainment. This move is part of Sega’s strategy to expand its presence in the mobile gaming market and improve its portfolio of game titles.

 

The acquisition deal, which is set to close in the coming weeks, will give Sega ownership of Rovio’s extensive portfolio of games, including Angry Birds, Bad Piggies, and Battle Bay, among others. With the mobile gaming market experiencing exponential growth, Sega’s move into this market is significant, as revenue from mobile games is estimated to account for over 50% of the global gaming market.

 

 

Rovio Entertainment has been a significant player in the mobile gaming industry for over a decade and has had great success with its Angry Birds franchise, which has been downloaded over 4.5 billion times. Sega’s acquisition of Rovio will give it access to the expertise and experience of Rovio in the mobile gaming industry.

 

In a statement, Sega CEO Haruki Satomi expressed his excitement over the acquisition, saying that Rovio’s talent and expertise in mobile gaming will be a significant asset to the company and help further expand its presence in the mobile gaming market.

 

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, after which Sega will begin to integrate Rovio’s portfolio of games into its existing mobile gaming offerings.
